There are six main types of garnet – Almandine, Pyrope, Spessartite, Grossular, Andradite and Uvarovite.  These vary in colour from red, yellowy green to green.  The chemical composition from one garnet to the next varies and therefore the hardness can vary from 6.5 to 7.5
