There are basically two groups of Garnet – those containing
aluminum (Pyrope, Almandine, and Spessartine) and those containing calcium (Uvarovite,
Grossular, and Andradite). The aluminum members
can be found blended and the calcium members can be found blended but the
aluminum and calcium members are seldom found blended together.
Garnet can range in many colours, not just red. The hardness varies from 6.5 to 7.5, with the
softer garnets being green in colour.
